When she escaped from slavery in Maryland in 1849, Harriet Tubman fled to Philadelphia and within a year was working with Wilmington, Delaware abolitionist Thomas Garrett as she returned to Maryland to help family members and others in their own escapes from slavery. By 1860 Tubman had made close to 20 expeditions to rescue some 300 people.
