If there’s one thing we’ve learned after seeing 18 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies over the last decade, it’s that Marvel Studios rarely misses an opportunity to pair off characters in ridiculously rewarding ways. It all started in 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers when the franchise’s disparate heroes united to form a super-team. Since then we’ve seen Captain America and Black Widow team up, as well as Thor and Hulk, Spider-Man and Iron Man, and all the pairings that assembled in Captain America: Civil War.
There’s one particular character pairing that would be totally out of this world should it come to pass, one that hardcore Marvel-ites have been dreaming about since Thor: Raganrok rocked theaters. It turns out, Ragnarok’s Jeff Goldblum is also aware of the connection his character the Grandmaster has with another one of Marvel’s cosmic weirdos.
“In the comic books, the character of the Grandmaster is the brother of the Collector, played by Benicio del Toro, who I adore. So I would enjoy doing something with him. That would be fun,” Goldblum told The Toronto Sun.
Goldblum is indeed onto something here! Benicio del Toro appeared in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the grandiose and ridiculously coifed Collector, an alien of undetermined age and origin who spends his existence collecting only the most dangerous, rare, and priceless artifacts. Goldblum’s Grandmaster, who debuted in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok, has a way similar vibe, although his profession is hosting gladiatorial combat in an alien arena instead of buying up collectibles.
Could these two appear side-by-side in a future Marvel movie? And could the movie screen contain that much super glam oddballery? That’s something Goldblum wants to know, and we fully support this mission. The next time one of Marvel’s heroes travels into space, they need to crash the Collector and the Grandmaster’s family reunion. It needs to happen.
