During our chat with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi at Marvel Studios' office this week, I asked the filmmaker why he opted not to give Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster blue skin like he has in the comics. "Because he did another movie where he was blue," said Waititi. Yes, he meant the cult classic flop Earth Girls Are Easy.

Waititi added that, because it's Jeff Goldblum, he didn't want to detract from that by concealing his appearance.

Earth Girls Are Easy is a 1988 sci-fi/musical/comedy starring Goldblum, Jim Carrey, and Damon Wayans as three furry aliens who head to Earth because they seek female companionship and end up meeting Geena Davis' character. Goldblum's character had blue fur while Wayans' was yellow and Carrey's was red.

In the Marvel Comics, the Grandmaster is an Elder of the Universe, the group of ancient cosmic characters that the Collector (played by Benicio Del Toro in Guardians of the Galaxy) also belongs to. He has blue skin, a shock of white hair, pupil-less eyes, and wears a high-collared yellow costume.

As you can see from the image below, Goldblum's Grandmaster suggests less a powerful cosmic being than a Las Vegas showman.

Goldblum has previously described his version of the Grandmaster as "a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells." He also said, "[Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do."

For more on Thor: Ragnarok, check out what Taika Waititi told us about the Planet Hulk character he plays in the film.

Thor: Ragnarok opens this November.
