Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) - A Behind the Scenes Battle

It's so easy to forget the struggle involved with creating fresh art, gambling on new ideas or storytelling forms, or even the difficulty in returning to classic storytelling forms.
Here are 5 things that came up while Lucas was getting the original Star Wars films off the ground.

1 - The studio bailed on the movie and set a shut down date on production before shooting was finished, so the crew split into three units and shot like crazy to get what they needed.

2 - The first edit that Lucas screened for his friends was not received well.

3 - Lucas went to the hospital in fear of having a heart attack at one point.

4 - John Williams' musical score was the only thing that exceeded Lucas' expectations in the film.

5 - Originally, Lucas brought in Harrison Ford just to help read with other actors in casting sessions and didn't want to put him in the movie, having already worked with him (Lucas wanted fully fresh faces for the leads.) Eventually, they ended up just casting him, obviously.

Be well.
