The following contains spoilers for DC vs. Vampires #11, now on sale from DC Comics
The conflict between the remaining mortal heroes of DC vs. Vampires and their vampiric former allies has been a largely brutal and tragic one. But it turns out one of DC's most infamous anti-heroes isn't just benefiting from the situation, but positively thriving in the tumultuous times.
DC vs. Vampires #11 (by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt, Francesco Mortarino, Pierluigi Casolino, and Tom Napolitano) reveals Lobo's role in the story, playing both sides against each other. It's just the latest example of Lobo's wildcard status, and highlights what makes him a unique fixture in the DC Universe, regardless of which DC Universe he's in.
Lobo is the Ultimate Wildcard of DC Vs. Vampires
The world of DC vs. Vampires has been a brutal one, full of death and destruction for the few remaining heroes left free of the vampiric Nightwing's control. Their last desperate plan to save the world has only further splintered the heroes with Batgirl leading a small band of rebels in Gotham City, Green Arrow working to liberate a camp of prisoners from an evil Hawkman's control, and Steel doing his best to escort Supergirl back into the sunlight to restore her powers. It's this last plan that might have the best chance of success, as the trio of Steel, Supergirl, and Jayna only has to infiltrate a spaceport and escort Supergirl onto a ship, so she may be exposed to sunlight.
After reaching Australia (at the cost of Mera staying behind to combat her vampirized husband Aquaman), the trio successfully sneak into the space-port. It turns out that Nightwing, looking to avoid any interplanetary incident, has been shipping all aliens on Earth back to their home worlds in exchange for peace. As they make their way through the base though, they come across Lobo, who has been hired by the vampires to provide security and ensure the refugee aliens return home. Initially, Lobo fights the trio, but when Supergirl reveals they can also make a deal with him, the main man agrees to listen.
From there, Lobo turns into the ultimate wildcard, quickly disrupting both sides. He helps the trio reach a ship (allowing Supergirl to slip away and reach a rocket that's taking off). But as soon as the corrupted Martian Manhunter and Ms. Martian investigate, Lobo quickly reveals the truth. Instead of siding with the vampires though, Lobo still fights alongside Steel and Jayna, admitting out loud he revealed the truth mainly to make things "interesting."
Lobo Can't Be Turned in DC Vs. Vampires - Or Controlled
It's a fun beat for Lobo and a good reminder of what makes Lobo such a variable in the DC Universe. Especially in alternate timelines (like the world of DCeased), Lobo's unique healing ability and flexible morality allow him to shift sides and turn the tide of battle with little warning. His healing factor likely prevents him from being turned into a vampire (unlike Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, and Superman, each of whom was corrupted in turn), but his willingness to work with them is a reminder that Lobo's scruples are more or less non-existent.
Still, his decision to work alongside the heroes and provide a distraction for Supergirl could be the key to unleashing the hero's most powerful fighter -- setting the stage for Supergirl to help bring about the end of the vampire kingdom. In a world where the living and the undead have become the primary moral conflict, Lobo's moral ambiguity has allowed him to transform into a deadly game-changer in the best kind of way. It's a position Lobo fills well in almost any universe, and it could be crucial for this timeline's last, best hope.
