Karl Benz founded Benz & Cie. in 1883 after leaving another company due to disagreements over product design. At Benz & Cie. he began producing gas engines and in 1885 invented the first true automobile, the Benz Patent Motorwagen. It had a 4-stroke engine, advanced coil ignition, and chain drive to the rear axle. Benz began selling the Motorwagen commercially in 1888, making it the first car available for purchase.
