A character from The Simpsons who debuted in its very first episode has been killed off after 35 years.

Warning: spoilers for The Simpsons follow.

As reported by The Independent, Larry Dalrymple, a seldom heard from but ever present character, was killed in Season 35, Episode 15 Cremains of the Day. Fans will recognise him as one of the regulars of Moe's Tavern, where he could almost always be seen drinking in the background.

Larry was practically silent for his entire tenure as a Simpsons character — only having two short lines since his 1989 debut — and despite being the focal point of Cremains of the Day he still went voiceless in the episode as he died off screen at the very beginning.

When Moe kicks all the patrons out of his bar, Larry remains in his seat, and is soon found to be dead. The episode reveals he thought of Homer, Lenny, Carl, and Moe as his best friends despite having never spoken to them, and they're tasked with spreading his ashes.

Larry was voiced by Harry Shearer, who also plays characters such as Mr Burns, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Waylon Smithers, and many more.

Now deep into its 35th season, The Simpsons is dipping more and more into its catalogue of deep cuts. Another recent example comes in Season 34's Pin Gal episode, where infamous Season 1 character Jacques made a return after more than three decades.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
