CHICO, Calif. — For the first time since the 2018 Camp Fire the Paradise Police Department’s (PPD) Volunteer Police Program, VIPS, has made a comeback.
The PPD is looking for locals on the ridge interested in helping their community through a volunteer-based program. Members will be asked to attend a 10-day training academy. Once certified police service volunteers will be trusted to consult watch patrols, manage traffic scenes, and even work within the office. Paradise Police Lieutenant, Anthony Borgman told KRCR that another large part of the job is helping with large events on the ridge.
“Members of the community getting involved helps us to maximize our staffing and the ability of the officer to concentrate on the officer's tasks.” Borgman continued, “Working together, enjoying their time working for the community, helping the community out, and really just helping things run smoother around here. “
Lt. Borgman added that this opportunity to bring back the ‘VIPS’ program came after the police department was able to be fully staffed. Now, with operations at full capacity, PPD can now bring in more of those looking to make a difference on the ridge.
