On Saturday morning, about 25 elementary school-age children gathered at the recently unveiled park for a knockout basketball tournament.
Lion’s Neighborhood Park reopened April 22. The city of Killeen was able to renovate the park off Rancier Avenue in north Killeen using federal grant money from Washington, D.C.
One of the things that came from the renovations was a beautiful new basketball court area, with fences to keep balls from rolling into traffic, and a blue and gray floor that looks as nice as some of the outdoor courts NBA players occupy in the summertime.
Killeen’s director of community services, Brett Williams, helped organize the event and provide area youngsters with something free to do early Saturday morning.
Kiara Johnson and Elise Kea were there to give a hand. The two are coaches with Little Dribblers basketball camp, which was originally started by former Shoemaker High School boy’s basketball coach Emund Prichett.
Even though it was nearly 100 degrees by the start of the event, those present were happy to compete for the chance to take home some cotton candy or a new backpack,
“(It’s about) having kids get outside and see their friends and win some prizes,” Kea said. “I also feel like it was to help introduce this park.“
