Aquaman himself -- Jason Momoa -- adds fuel to the fire surrounding his DCU future.
Momoa was on The Tonight Show, describing his journey with Aquaman and its upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. "When I finished the first one, I was really pumped and I came back in and wrote a treatment," he says. "Then I went in and pitched it. Because, now he's a father, he's married, he's the king. Like, he was a slacker in the first one. Now he's like, 'I don't know what to do.' You basically get to go on that journey with him, and you end up finding out that it's him and his brother, and there's this journey that they go on, and there are differences in how they save the planet."
When asked whether this journey could continue into Aquaman 3, he said, "I mean, this is kind of, like, the end of this—The DC Universe. I mean, things have happened before. So I guess if people like it...?" As he leans over to Fallon, Momoa dropped one of the biggest hints yet, saying coyly, "But yeah... there'll always be a place for me at DC."
James Wan Is Open to Aquaman 3
Comments from Aquaman director James Wan in October fueled rumors that the DCU reset didn't necessarily spell the end of Aquaman. Wan claimed he'd be open to returning for a threequel if "I got the same freedom I’ve had on these first two." He also indicated that DC Studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran haven't necessarily pulled the plug on the character, or that if they had, they were yet to communicate it to him.
Momoa's cryptic comment that "there will always be a place for me at DC" is among the biggest hints that he's set to play Lobo in the upcoming DCU. Rumors surrounding a possible Lobo cast spiked in 2022, with the star revealing in a CBR exclusive at the time: "It would be amazing if that happened." A report in Oct. 2023 also suggested he has "engaged in talks" to play Lobo. With 2018's Aquaman being an unexpected smash hit, Momoa as Lobo may be among the big-name draws that Superman: Legacy needs to start the new DCU strong. David Corenswet has been announced as Superman/Clark Kent with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The Exorcism of God's María Gabriela De Faría was recently announced to be playing Angela Spica, a.k.a. The Engineer.
Warner Bros. distributes Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is described as: "Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theaters on Dec. 20, 2023.
