Why would there be a signature on the lower part of the passenger side of the windshield of my GLS? It looks like "Carl Beuz" in script and seems to be indelible, like part of the manufacturing process.

Karl Benz, the inventor of the modern gasoline automobile, also the founder of the Benz company that became Mercedes-Benz.
It is on most/all modern Mercedes. That being said, starting MY19 vehicles used Mercedes instead.

Interesting! It's a 2022 GLS. My 2022 EQS 580 has "Mercedes" windshield signature. Odd that a German manufacturer spelled his name with a C instead of K.

Well, he is also known as Carl Friedrich Benz so there is that. Yup, as mentioned earlier, MY19 and up is replaced with Mercedes instead.
I haven't paid too much attention, so it is a pretty small sample size, but every 2020-2022 167 GLE/GLS I've seen as the Carl Benz signature, so I don't think it was replaced on those vehicles at least.
