Hoops tournament shows heart

Dozens showed up to Amarillo College's Carter Fitness Center on Saturday to play basketball, support young people in the community and remember a woman who loved to give.

This was the third year for the annual Renee's Circle of Friends basketball game. The organization was created in 2007 as a memorial to Renee Williams, who died from diabetes complications a year earlier.

Her sister, Inger Williams, wanted to help young women in the community pursue higher education and equip them with the skills needed to enter the work force.

"My sister was always one to help somebody do something," Williams said. "We want to help everybody know what they're worth."

The team representing Men and Women of Faith was beaten by Assured Solutions in the first round. Assured Solutions then played a team of Venom football players and won by 3 points.

The game raised funds through tickets and donations, allowing Williams and other volunteers to continue to impact young women in the community.

"We're there to support them with tuition, small scholarships and whatever college kids need," she said.

The organization started with more than 20 volunteers. Williams said the number has dwindled to four, but they continue to do whatever they can.

"We're small in number but we're big in heart," she said.

The organization helped fund a student's trip to Hawaii, where she toured and played in band on the USS Missouri. They've also provided scholarships, funds to cover the costs of books, and workshops to help teach young people the skills they need to "get ready for the world."

Assured Solutions owner Elton Bradley is a friend of the Wililams family who helped gather a team for the game.

"An organization like this that gives back and provides the resources and tools for women is worth supporting," said Bradley. "I think if you have the opportunity to support something like this, you should."

About $700 was raised through donations and ticket sales. Those who want to contact the organization can do so through their Facebook page by searching for Renee's Circle of Friends.
