Hoops Scorecard

The single reason why I decided to bother with Hoops is because of semi-hype I heard about it and how it’s some of the worst new shows out there. And besides, since it’s the end tail of January I didn’t wanted to start something bigger, so this being my last binge for the month made enough of sense. I am really glad that it didn’t took that much time with this one because it is as terrible as everyone says it is. Just like Brickleberry, Hoops can be described as a textbook of things that usually go wrong in shows aimed for adult audience. But unlike Brickleberry that was so extreme with its foul humor and desire to make you barf, Hoops is way more passive, but just as worthless and lazy at what it does. Every single episode to one or other extent waste nearly all the time on the exact same formula of the comedy, and it’s got tiresome very fast while also never being funny since the beginning. No character able to shut up about dicks or piss or other low bar subject regardless if moment supposed to be serious or not. There’s never a rightful context behind the dialogue of a wide placement, it’s simple vulgarity that goes nowhere. It would’ve been one thing if at least story was good, but it’s absolutely ain’t when all of those attempts at being funny takes 70% of the screentime if not even more. Not helping the times when scenes can drag for a minute by contributing absolutely nothing, juts like in flavor of Family Guy, though I surprised that this show didn’t attempted own cutaways. But on a surface, it’s something something about baseball team and how it’s coach tired to raise to the top. I couldn’t care less about anything that happened just alone for the fact oh how awful protagonist is. Ben by default has no likable qualities in him, he’s obnoxious, never able to listen to anyone else, and of course the main source of show’s genius humor. It could’ve worked if he grew up over the time, but each time he showed something nice in him at the end of one episode, in another he starts at the first base. Later on this show also started to focus on Ben’s divorce issue with his ex wife, and turing already unfunny running gag into complete tumor. Not only it’s has exact the same effect as that Rick and Morty’s divorce drama from Season 3, with that Ben’s ex ended up looking as nothing more than Beth’s clone (ffr she even has similar connection to horses). The later part of the show also threw Ron into the dumpster, which was possibly the only likable character from the cast thanks for being careful and calm enough. Ben’s baseball team also sucks big time, none of the members of it are more than a bunch one the most tiring stereotypes such as fatass, gay, nerd, or Marcus (dude had so little of an screentime that I can’t even remember what his’ stereotype supposed to be). Just from naming their single traits you could already predict every single move that they do in the show, and each time they receive a sub-plot it became painful. The worst part about all of them is that they never keep consistent opinion over Ben as their coach. Since the first episode they already portrayed him as a bad trainer juts in the last episode pulling out "OHHHHHHH so he was a dick all along????" card as it’s wasn’t been clear since the beginning. There’s also Matty, he’s harmless and seemed like a character who would get better by the end, but he stopped to grow any development after first few drops. And for the finale straw, show’s visuals are so uninspired. The art-style is obliviously copied from the same Rick and Morty, to the extent so big where I could’ve use some of the screenshots out of context and someone would say that it’s from the former show, as the only true difference is the lack of wired looking peeps on characters. Acknowledging unoriginal art, show’s just simply stiff, for the most part characters have the same poses all the time, and for something that supposed to focus on baseball, there’s sure a lack of energy there.

The only thing that prevents me from downright despise this show is the fact that it’s only 10 episodes long, which went very quickly with me. But short this show or not, it’s absolutely awful worthy in every way, and I wanted to get rid of it so badly that I ended up making scorecard for it in one click. There’s nothing worthwhile in Hoops, from it’s humor, character and even animation, and the lack of any positive episodes proves it. At best I find a very generous passable one, and even then I feel like I was too nice on it since it still has standard problems. I am absolutely not surprised that show got canceled this fast, it does ends on a cliffhanger with that, but finale episode clearly didn’t gave a single fuck anyway so I don’t think second season would change anything. That saying a lot when the funniest moment from this show is the ridiculous sound effect of guitar during the translations.
