So many are shocked and asking how Simone Biles, the greatest gymnast of all time, could make it to the world stage, as she has on so many occasions in recent years, and all of a sudden have a mental block that prevents her from taking the gold medals so many of us wanted to see her earn here in Tokyo. Some are questioning if she truly is the G.O.A.T. if she is unable to just “suck it up” and “act” like the greatest. You know, “step-up” like a real champ. What is happening with Simone, in my opinion, has no bearing on her status as the greatest gymnast of all time. Her record verifies that fact-- no need to argue. What she reportedly is dealing with is very real and is not something that can be readily controlled, if at all.

Simone Biles is still the goat even if she doesn’t participate in gymnastics ever again. (But, let’s us pray that is not the case.)

The biggest shock of the Olympic Games remains Simone Biles leaving the team competition. This morning, we learned she would not compete in the individual All-Around events taking place Thursday in Tokyo either.

In a matter of nine hours, we felt the extreme joy of Olympic achievement and the heartache when things don’t go as expected.

Simone Biles joined Hoda Kotb on the TODAY Show to discuss her preparations for the Tokyo Olympics. Like many Olympians, Biles has extended her training by a year for the pandemic-delayed games. “We are in a pandemic so we’re kind of ready for whatever life throws at us at this point so we’re training as if and whatever happens, happens,” Biles said. Adapting to the threat of COVID-19, Biles recently had to shift to virtual training with cameras set up through the gym while her coach was in quarantine after being exposed to the coronavirus. With the Olympics underway amid a spike in cases, Biles is patiently waiting to hear the committee’s decisions regarding the event and safety protocols to be implemented.
