WWD reports that the City of Paris has spent 30M Euros cleaning up the Champs-Elysees in advance of the Olympic Games. Parisians had all but deserted the Champs-Élysées despite a footfall of 1.3M a month. A study found that only 2% out of people on the avenue were local strollers, while 50% were tourists and 48% were people who work in the area. I just watched the Paris Olympics Games opening ceremony, and despite the media's polarised views, I was absolutely captivated! Here's why: 1. Bold Innovation. The first-ever outdoor opening ceremony was incredibly memorable. By using the city itself as a stage, it showcased iconic Parisian scenes in a breathtaking way. This "wall-less" concept perfectly aligns with the slogan "Games Wide Open," highlighting inclusivity and openness. 2. Stunning Storytelling. The ceremony was a complex, diverse blend of rich cultural elements and modern performances. From vibrant pop acts to moments of serene elegance, each segment told a powerful story that evoked deep emotions in me. I believe this is the true power of storytelling – its ability to connect and move people. 3. Iconic Visuals. Last night felt like a "Paris party on a Friday night." It was unforgettable, with iconic scenarios like the spectacular light show at the Eiffel Tower, the vivid colours in performers' costumes, and boats floating along the Seine illuminated by beautiful lights. If you didn't watch the Paris Olympic Opening Ceremonies Live today you NEED to watch the replay tonight. This was an incredible display of creativity and artistry, making it one of the most memorable ceremonies (or any performance for that matter) I've ever seen. The Creative Direction was meticulously crafted, showcasing the rich history and vibrant culture of France - both past and present. The Top 10 highlights for me: →  For the first time in Olympic history, each country's delegation arrived by boat instead of the usual stadium setting which allowed the city's residents to take in the ceremonies from the riverbanks. →  The French committee beautifully blended modern and classical culture perfectly capturing the essence of French history (from the French Revolution to Marie Antoinette) while incorporating breakdancers with core themes of inclusivity, sustainability, and world peace. → Lady Gaga wowed with a Cabaret-style performance and Juliette Armanet did a rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" on the Seine. → Celine Dion closed the show with an emotional performance on top of the Eiffel Tower above an Eiffel-tour-shaped stage which Olympians gathered around. → A masked torch bearer did parkour atop the Musee D'Orsay and ziplined through the city. → A scene featuring Marie Antoinette was brought to life with a stunning display of fireworks, cascading red streamers, and an electrifying duet between a rock band and an opera singer. → An Olympian, draped in the Olympic flag, gracefully glided along the Seine on a mechanical horse while carrying the torch. → The armored rider was enveloped with pegasus symbolism as the torch was brought forward - much like Zeus who instructed him to bring lightning and thunder from Olympus. → From a tourism marketing perspective, it was a pure genius move to showcase Paris in such a unique way that highlighted the city's stunning architecture. → The Olympic torch was lit and then ascended high above the Paris streets in a hot air balloon, symbolizing the city's historical significance as the birthplace of hot air balloon flights. Overall, it was bold and innovative - unapologetically daring in every sense. This was truly a ceremony unlike any other.
